Volunteer – Cikananga Wildlife Center

CIKANANGA

WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF ME?

Volunteers will be working closely together with our Indonesian staff, six days a week from 7 am to 4 pm including lunch break. (11.30-13.00 PM)

Tasks:

Daily care of the animals (feeding, cleaning the enclosures, providing enrichment)

Food preparation

Assist with medical treatments

Animal behaviour observation

Assist with confiscations and release of the animals (we can’t guarantee this happens when you are here, as we can’t always plan this)

Teamwork, where all the staff and volunteers will work on building projects in the park.

Next to the routine work there are possibilities to help with research we do, or to help with some of our other programs. For example data collection-observation on those eagles that are in the rehabilitation process.

HOW LONG CAN I VOLUNTEER FOR?

As long as a volunteer want to. Minimum stay is 1 week.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS, IF ANY, DO I REQUIRE?

The qualification a volunteer needs to have are; loving animals, enthusiasm, hard worker, eager to learn, adaptability to a new culture and you must be able to live and work in a primitive environment.

WHAT LANGUAGE WILL I NEED TO KNOW?

Most people who work in the center speak a little English. But they love it when you learn a few words of Bahasa Indonesia.

HOW DO I GET TO YOUR LOCATION?

The center is located about 32 km south of Sukabumi on the mountainside in the province of West Java.
Option 1: You can travel very easy by Damri airport bus directly from the airport to the city of Bogor which is about 60 km (~2 hours). From there take a minibus  to Sukabumi (~3 hours). (Minisbusses (angkots) are located in front of Botanic Square in Bogor). From Sukabumi (in front of RAMAYANA supermarket) you can take an ankot to terminal Jubleg. From Jubleg you take another angkot to Nyalninding. It takes another 1.5 hour by public transport to the next village (Nyalindung) close to Cikananga. From here you can take a motorbike taxi (Ojek) to Cikananga. (Angkots and Ojeks wont drive after its dark from Jubleg)
On Tuesday and Saturday one of our staff members will go to Sukabumi to buy food for the animals. On these days you have to pay the gasoline for the car. On other days the fee is 200.000 Rp to be picked up.

Option 2: An airport pick-up from Jakarta (Soekarno Hatta) can be arranged (1 car for maximum 4 people). Meeting point with our driver is at the coffee-bar OLD TOWN, White Coffee,,  at Terminal D2 /2E. Our driver will have a paper with you name on it. The trip from Jakarta Airport to Cikananga will take about 6 hours or more.

Additional costs during your stay

-Center staff make regular trips to Sukabumi return on Tuesdays and Saturdays.  Journeys made with staff on these days must be by prior arrangement and fuel costs will be covered by you.
-Transportation from the center to Sukabumi return on all other days must be by prior arrangement and cost will be provided at time of booking.
-Pickup from Sukabumi must be by prior arrangement IDR 200.000 (per person)
-Pickup from Jakarta Airport is IDR 1,300.000 (2 people). If there are more than 2 people we ask IDR200.000 (per additional person).

WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION, MEALS AND FACILITIES CAN I EXPECT TO BE AVAILABLE TO ME?

-Wooden dormitories with bunk-beds. Toilets and showers are outside the building.

-There is a big wooden/bamboo cantina with the most beautiful view on the sawa’s (rice fields).

-Concrete guesthouses (Mess) with a bathroom, kitchen, living room and bedroom. (You may have to share your room with other volunteers.)

-The quest houses and dormitories are located in the center.

-Local food is served twice a day (lunch and dinner). Vegetarian meals can be arranged. Breakfast you have to arrange by yourself.

-We provide pillows and blankets and laundry service

-Toilets and showers are Indonesian style (Mandi).

WHAT WILDLIFE SPECIES ARE THERE?

Cikananga Wildlife Center gives home to a all kinds of animals species, like: Javan leopards, Sunbears, different kind of primate species (orang-utans, gibbons, slow lorises, macaques, langurs) and different kind of reptile and bird species .

WHAT ATTRACTIONS CAN I EXPERIENCE DURING FREE-TIME?

-Internet: In Cikananga we don’t have internet access. If you want to use internet you can go to one of the internet café in Nyalindung. You can walk to there, it’s about 1 hour walking or you can go there by “ojek” – a motorbike with driver.
-Walk in the area of Cikananga: We can arrange a walk for your trough the area (tea plantages, rice fields, small villages etc.) of Cikananga.
-Motor trip with one of the keepers: If you like to see the area around Cikananga in a quicker way then walking, you can ask one of the keepers to take you around on the motor.
-Trip to a bat cave, and national parks: We can arrange a few trips for you to see the flora and fauna from Java – Indonesia.
-Next to these activities in the evening hours volunteers can play games together, making campfires, or play after work football or badminton with the animal keepers.

Cikananga Wildlife Center (CWC) or Pusat Penyelamatan Satwa Cikananga (PPSC) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization for the conservation of Indonesian wildlife.

Cikananga Wildlife Center was established on August 27th 2001. Since then it has been dedicating its efforts to the welfare and conservation of Indonesian wildlife and its habitat. It provides facilities and man-power to rehabilitate confiscated wild animals, helps them regain their natural behavior lost during captivation and tries to reintroduce them into their natural habitat. The center also provides a permanent sanctuary for animals that cannot be released back into the wild.

The Center is open for local and international students, researchers and other individuals wanting to volunteer or study Indonesian wildlife. The volunteer program brings valuable support to the center and provide the volunteers with an opportunity to experience the rescue and conservation of Indonesian wildlife. Participation is possible all year round.
