Volunteer – BEES

BEESWHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF ME?

Volunteers are expected to come with an open mind, be respectful of local customs and culture. No open tops or short shorts. You will be expected to be on time for projects. You will be expected to have read and fully understand the rules and procedures at BEES regarding the elephants and safety on site prior to starting work.

Volunteers are expected to be responsible for their own belongings, drinking alcohol is permitted if you are of age and drink responsibly. Irresponsible drinking can lead yourself or others in to unsafe situations and will not be tolerated. Do not bring Illegal drugs on to the project at any time, if found you will be removed from the volunteer program without refund.

HOW LONG CAN I VOLUNTEER FOR?

You can volunteer for 1, 2, 3 weeks or 1 month.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS, IF ANY, DO I REQUIRE?

A love and interest in Animals in particular elephants

WILL I NEED TO KNOW ANOTHER LANGUAGE?

English and if possible basic Thai or carry a small English Thai pocket dictionary

HOW DO I GET TO YOUR LOCATION?

Fly into Chiang Mai Airport you may make your own way here or organize with us.
We collect from hotel on a Monday morning and drop back Sunday afternoons.

WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION, MEALS AND FACILITIES CAN I EXPECT TO BE AVAILABLE TO ME?

Accommodation: is a mattress on the floor with a mosquito net. You will be staying in a unique Thai styled hut on the project. At your request we also have unique opportunities for volunteers to live amongst a Thai family in a home stay in the village a short walk from the site.
Facilities: The toilet is a squat toilet and the shower is cold water in a large bucket.
Meals: 3 meals cooked by our staff per day. Thai style cuisine. Water Tea and coffee will always be available. Vegetarian, Vegan and Meat options. Please advise if you have special food requirements upon booking. If your requirements are too much for the cooking staff they will be at your own expense.

WHAT WILDLIFE SPECIES ARE THERE?

Elephants, Snakes (Cobra’s, small garden snakes etc), Birds (Owls, other predatory birds, water herons etc), Lizards (Skinks, water dragons), Squirrels

WHAT ATTRACTIONS CAN I EXPERIENCE DURING FREE-TIME?

There will be allocated free time after projects have finished and half a day during your weeks stay.
We will take you sightseeing, go to the local coffee shop/orphanage, go to use the internet, visit waterfalls and temples.

IN CONCLUSION

BEES – Burm and Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary is a home for old, retired elephants. BEES gives elephants a chance to live free before their time runs out!!
Located 2.5hrs drive South-West of Chiang Mai through beautiful mountains and country side you could find yourself having an experience like you have never imagined!!
BEES is a local family and community based project that is located in a valley in Mae Tan, Thung Yaw Maechaem. With breath taking views of Doi Inthanon the highest mountain of Thailand and beautiful scenery, this is a place you might find yourself lost in moment.
Experience elephants playing, walking, running and having the chance to be free off chains…. Something well deserved for these Elephants that have worked in logging and trekking their whole life before coming and experiencing freedom at BEES.
